Old and new were on display at Monfort Park for the Greeley West cross country team on Saturday morning. The old, senior Mya Boyd, said she put forth some extra effort for her last Andy Myers Invitational. The new, freshman Adyan Young, took 20 seconds off of last week’s first varsity run, finishing his first Andy Myers with a personal best time.
Overall the Spartan girls placed 5th overall and the boys finished 8th
“I didn’t think I was going to do too well this week,” Boyd said. “But I trained pretty hard and did as well as I could.”
Boyd didn’t compete in the first team event of the season due to a school retreat, but returned to action and finished 13th overall with a time of 23:13 She was pleased with her time, but looks forward to improving upon it through the season. “I definitely want to get to where I was in my prime,” Boyd said. “I’m not there yet, but my big goal will be to break 20 (minutes).”
Meanwhile in the boys race, senior Bodhen Suntych led all point scorers with a 19:40 time and 22nd place finish. But it was Young who surprised everyone. Running in just his second varsity race, Young was the second Spartan across the finish line with a time of 21:05. Even he was surprised by his time. “Monfort really sucks,” Young said. “It’s always cursed with heat.”
Young, who finished 36th overall, said the lack of shade at Monfort Park makes it a tough place to run. “(In middle school) we ran after school but it was still hot today,” Young added.
Young said his performance should help him reach his goal of a sub-20 minute time before the end of the season and said he had a better mindset for this race than his last.
But all the Spartans work a little bit harder for the Andy Myers Invitational, the only meet they will host this season. “With this being the Andy Myers race, and him having gone to West, it’s always a big deal,” Boyd said.
The Brighton girls and Fort Morgan boys teams won the event. The Spartans will compete again on Friday at the Legacy Lightning Invite in Broomfield.
